Condition Explained
Traveler’s diarrhea is a common digestive condition that leads to loose stools and stomach cramps, usually caused by consuming contaminated food or water. While it’s often unpleasant, it is typically not serious and resolves in most cases without complications.
Symptoms

Traveler’s diarrhea can develop suddenly while you’re abroad or shortly after returning home. Most cases improve within 1–2 days without treatment, and full recovery usually occurs within a week. However, it’s possible to experience more than one episode during the same trip.
Common symptoms include:
-
Passing three or more loose or watery stools in a day
-
An urgent need to use the toilet
-
Stomach cramps
-
Nausea or vomiting
-
Fever
In some cases, symptoms may be more severe, such as dehydration, persistent vomiting, high fever, bloody stools, or intense abdominal or rectal pain. If diarrhea lasts longer than a few days, or if you or your child develop these more serious symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.
